30,000 MORE CARS ON mOPAC?
For years, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been steadily moving forward with plans to transform Mopac Expressway into a western bypass route for I-35 traffic. Piece by piece, these state highway planners have brought forward five separate toll projects in Southwest Austin. When combined, these segments create a massive 12-to-16 lane, partially tolled highway loop, diverting I-35 traffic south of Austin westward onto Mopac and then north to Lady Bird Lake and beyond.
Once this loop is completed, and the traffic floodgates open, traffic is projected to increase on Mopac by over 30,000 cars per day. As traffic expert Mike Brown says, if South Mopac is connected to I-35 via SH 45 SW, then traffic on Mopac will "explode", and you simply cannot add enough lanes to Mopac to accommodate all of the traffic.
